Where are good fishing spots in Connecticut?

I live in northwestern Connecticut and the biggest fish I can find around here is a 5lb largemouth. I have a 6 ft medium action Ugly Stick and I want to catch large fish without ruining my rod. I've heard about Niantic Bay, but where are some specific spots where I can fish from shore? P.S. I don't have a boat.
